GOODBYE CLAY PIPES! 
After more than twenty-five years of being major stockists of Naylor clay pipes we are saying goodbye to clay. As the market has changed, clay pipes are less in demand, and our business has developed in other areas - especially timber & aggregates. Our stocks havel been returned to Naylors and replaced with their range of plastic pipes - so our long relationship with Naylors will continue. We will still be able to obtain clay pipes to order and will continue to stock a good range of adaptors, connectors and ancilliary items. (Dec 09)

WESTERN BUILDERS MERCHANTS 
Since it's establishment in 1979, Ashmead has been a member of Westcountry buying society WBM. With changes in the industry, WBM merged with the h&b buying group in 2008, and has now (Nov 09) closed as a separate entity. We'd like to thank all their staff - especially former Director & Secretary Elizabeth Harman - for all their hard work over many years helping us & the other members. Thank you!

FAMOUS DEVON QUARRY SHUTS 
- BUT YOU CAN STILL COLLECT LOOSE SAND & AGGREGATES FROM OUR YARD NEARBY! 
Hillhead Quarry at Uffculme in Devon has shut it's gates for the last time in September 2008. The quarry was renowned for it's high quality building sands and aggregates which were supplied to Mid-Devon for generations. 
 
Famous building sands included the bricklayers' favourite "Andrews & Miller" and a trusty rendering sand "Hillhead Mixed". It's famous red aggregate made the pink tinged concrete in such landmarks as the award winning new Bideford Bridge. 
 
The quarry is owned by Aggregate Industries Plc - formerly EEC Quarries Ltd. Before this it was owned by Andrews & Miller Ltd - and supplied aggregates to the nearby Downs Blockworks (also then owned by Andrews & Miller), and now a concrete paver plant. 
 
ASHMEAD have supplied quarry materials from the bays in their yard a couple of miles from Uffculme, and continue to do so. Many types of materials are kept in stock, loose, in dumpy bags, or in handy 25Kg polybags. 
 
We can also supply full 20 Tonne loads of sand, aggregate or other materials in loads "direct to site" - subject to suitable access. 
 
TIVERTON MERCHANT CLOSES... 
Adverts in the Mid Devon Gazette in July 2008 announced the closure of a Tiverton Builders' Merchant. Don't worry - if you want timber, boards, batten, or other building materials you can use Ashmead instead! We've been supplying Tiverton and area for over 25 years - and intend to go on doing so for a good bit longer! Clive Holley our Willand branch manager is highly knowledgeable about timber (and other building materials) with a wealth of experience gained from running sawmills and working in the industry all of his working life. Willand is within easy reach of Tiverton and we deliver there most days. 
CELCON BLOCKS 
 
We now stock CELCON aerated blocks. Unlike Durox blocks which we have stocked for many years they are a standard block size, so it's easy to work out quantities - 10 per M2! Ring us now for your delivery!

h&b BUYING GROUP (UPDATE 25/6/10) 
In March 2008 we joined the h&b buying group as it's 31st member. Since then membership has increased to nearly 70. All members are independent builders merchants - not owned by national or international companies. At Ashmead we value membership as it helps us buy better - so that we can pass savings on to our customers - and so remain competitive in the current market conditions.  
h&b is run by it's merchant members, carefully overseen by the estimable Martin Mansfield who is based at the BRE at Garston (type h& b buying group into Google for more info). The h&b Chairman is Peter Buttle of Buttle Plc, much respected for his long merchanting experience.
